Our Values

Looking to reduce your carbon footprint? We are a small British business, with an ethical approach. Discover cruelty-free, natural & organic facials & skincare.

Welcome to Orchard View naturals, established in 2006 in Somerset, England.

A love of nature is at the heart of everything we do. We try to tread lightly. It’s not always easy & we’re far from perfect, but we're proud to be an ethical small business.

At OV HQ we try to reduce waste & to make responsible choices where we can. Choosing recycled paper/card, having a green energy tariff, responsible banking, reducing water & energy waste through our choice of textiles, dressing our studio in an eco-friendly way, choosing the ingredients for our skincare products we use independent small businesses in the UK.

Lucy Stevens is a member of the Federation of Holistic Therapists & registered with the Professional Standards Authority. This assures clients of a professional approach where a code of ethics is stringently followed. In 2020, OV naturals was shortlisted for Green Therapy Business of the Year.

Apple Tree Studio, our facial treatments space, opened in 2020. A labour of love, the interior was created with sustainability at its heart. We did everything to keep it as plastic-free as possible, with a strict sourcing policy. The journey is on the blog. The result is a relaxing, calming space for you to enjoy your treatments.

The area around the studio is being 'greened up' with trees, shrubs, herbs, flowers & plants for pollinators, with wildflower areas & a natural approach (no pesticides or herbicides).

For your facials, we choose cruelty-free, natural & organic products. Along with our own OV naturals skincare products, we source mainly from independent companies in the UK who have an ethical approach. The only non-vegan ingredient used occasionally is beeswax (which is swapped out for vegan facials).

Since September 2020, we are subscribed with Ecologi, an organisation which helps offset the impact of our small business, by planting trees & investing in global environmental initiatives. While we try our best to minimise our footprint, we value the opportunity to further protect the environment. We're also signed up to the Sustainable Beauty Coalition (British Beauty Council).

Sustainable Sourcing

We're very clear on our OV naturals ingredients policy, both with the products we make here in Somerset & the other skincare brands we use in treatments. This has been the same since 2006.

We only use cruelty-free, natural, organic, plant-based & vegan ingredients (apart from beeswax in our face cream - this is swapped out in a vegan facial.) We never use palm oil. We keep an eye on sustainability & make careful choices, for example, choosing oils such as Cedarwood from carefully managed forests. By using many COSMOS/Soil Association organically-certified ingredients, we have some assurance that there is an ethical process in place, from planting to processing (not to mention the potency & quality). Independent suppliers in the UK are our preference, as they are often run by experts who are close to the products & have similar ethics to us. For example, they can assure us that their ingredients are cruelty-free, organic, certified, cold-pressed... in other words, authentic.

But there are many plants & environments under threat. This is a challenge & we need more transparency from the industry about production, supply chains & sustainability. Our suppliers do try to be helpful when we ask questions. We've had to 'let go' a few who aren't over the years.

If you are seeking an organic product, with certified ingredients, choose our facial oils (84-99% organic) & face cream. Ideally all of our products would be organic but the cost is sometimes prohibitive.

Also in an ideal world our organic products would bear a certification symbol, but again for a tiny producer, the cost & administration of this is currently prohibitive. When I say 'tiny' - it's just Lucy doing everything from making the tea to formulation & manufacture.

Re-use & Recycle
We use plastic-free, eco-friendly packaging & printed materials. Where possible, we source locally, to reduce carbon footprint & support the local economy. Some examples:
  • OV naturals leaflets are made from 85% UK post-consumer cardboard waste & printed locally in Ilminster. For therapy work, leaflets are printed by us on 100% recycled paper - that way, we don't need to do big print runs, so we minimise waste.

  • Business cards are made from recycled and/or FSC certified card.

  • Our black shredded packaging tissue is made from 100% UK recycled paper. Gold & purple tissue paper, which we use to wrap products, are acid-free & printed in Southwest UK.

  • To post your products we use reclaimed boxes & packing “peanuts”, Kraft paper tape & labels. Postal bags are 'Green', with a kraft outer and recycled paper cushioning.

  • Clear pockets, which we use for sample items, are made from biodegradable corn starch.

  • Our purple bottles & jars are recyclable glass, along with the glass element of the pipettes. Toners come in recyclable aluminium bottles. At this time, not all of the closures are plastic-free or recyclable, but suppliers are moving with the times and hopefully soon we’ll have more choice. To help reduce waste, we have screw-top refills available, so you can re-use your pump or pipettes. The screw-top is aluminium & recyclable.

These are just some examples of the ways we work to help save the planet for future generations & to preserve the natural world around us.

What else are we doing about sustainability of packaging?

  • Talking with our suppliers to let them know we're seeking sustainable alternatives (we've been on the case for some time)
  • Our next batch of face creams will come with a recylable aluminium lid
